na img hump intro Battle for Whales ContinuesWhales are majestic creatures, famed for their high intelligence and beautiful singing. For centuries, humans have actually exploited whales for oil and meat. Due to this hunting, whales are close to extinction and the intercontinental community has banned whale fishing. However, Japan defies the ban on whale angling.

One country in particular that has been engaging in this inhumane and immoral task against nature is Japan. Large whale fishing vessels have been dispatched around the seas of Japan, mainly in the western Pacific Ocean, to hunt down innocent whales and collect their meat and other parts to be utilized for oil, fertilizer, perfume, shampoo, cleansing soap, gelatin, margarine and other items. Regardless of the uses it can bring, these living creatures really should not have to pay their lives simply for this senseless function.

One business has really objected to this wrongful activity and has aimed to save the whales from near extinction. The Ocean Shepherd is an intercontinental non-profit business that was founded last 1977. As stated in their mission statement, the business aims to stop the destruction of the marine environment and the slaughter of wildlife around the globe’s oceans in order to safeguard and protect the species and ecosystems.

Whale hunting has actually been around the globe banned because 1986. The International Whaling Commission enacted this ban however left a number of loopholes open. Whales can be fished for medical investigation, as well as by a couple aboriginal groups. Japan hunts whales to utilize their meat and professes that they are executing medical investigation. Why are humpback whales endangered and why don’t we save them? im the biggest fan of whales especially humpbacks so why do people treat them so cruely??? its just inhumaine

  2. they are endangered the same as my wolves people hunted them to near extinction. Except they thought wolves were vermin and needed to die thankfully most of our species are protected from cruelty. and hunting If we help support the foundations that help them we can save them. I love every animal on earth and I DO put animals in front of humans because they actually treat earth with respect!

Humpback and many other whales are fully protected and are making a comeback. The reason for their drastic decline was commercial whaling – which also destroyed the whale stocks for many native peoples who carried out low level whaling to survive. These days, nobody will starve without whaling and so there is no need for it to occur. It is cruel – because it takes a long time to kill the animal and many get away seriously injured. Also, there was no holds barred – mothers with young or who were pregnant were especially susceptible and so for one kill often more than one whale died in the process.

Humpbacks are endangered because we (in general) hunted them to near extinction. You obviously know that. We ARE doing things to save them, and in fact there are more humpback whales estimated in the wild now than in over 100 years. Well into the 10′s of thousands in the Pacific. The reason it’s so slow going is because it takes so long for a whale to carry a calf to term, raise it, and train it to survive on it’s own. Simple biology. We can only do so much. After that the species itself needs to do the work. There are no such things as captive breeding facilities for humpback whales. I couldn’t even imagine the artificial insemination program…

They just creep me out. I carry a baseball bat just in case I see one on the beach.

  8. River Hermit says:

Hello…still hanging around, they are gonna try to give them a shot of antibiotics & spray them with fire hoses, perhaps if they’d leave them alone they would move on..as they had started to do once already…they aren’t trying nearly as much nor as hard as they did with Humphrey…I keep hoping they will just take off soon…to live & survive where they belong..in the ocean !! BTW they have names now too Delta & Dawn ;) The sooner they leave the happier I’ll be for them…Latest Update, the fire hose did not work !! Don’t know why they don’t do as they did with Humphrey, took awhile but it worked & he lived here 27 days..so don’t get in a panic as the news seems to do about their health..Humphreys fine !! In case ya ain’t guessed..I live on the Sac River ;) & have the Whale Watch link on my 360 if you wish to keep track as well LOL !! Take Care

  11. fishingmstr says:

Did they ever save those humpback whales in California?

  12. The media and Ocean mariners did lose track of them and were only hopeful that they made it…I however have located them and they have even caught up with their original pod and their injuries seem to be healing as well as the Marine Biologist anticipated. I planted my findings in their computer network in effort to comfort the Humans that were deeply concerned. 21st Century Man

How would the exctintion of the Humpback Whale efect the world and the humans in it? I need any information on if the humpback whales went exctinted how it would this effect the rest of the world. What would happen to people? What would happen to the parts of the world they live in? Any extra facts on the humpback whale will also be helpful. Thanks to whoever answer.

  15. chris says:

Humpback whales are giant vaccuum cleaners of the world’s oceans that require copious amounts of plankton to survive. The extinction of only the humpback may not cause too many global issues as their resources may become exploited by other baleen whales yet if all baleen whales (such as blue, minke, fin) went extinct this could have massive consequences. The ocean is an ecosystem and if whales were removed the amount of plankton in the ocean could increase and even result in an ecosystem collapse. It sounds strange that predation results in ecosystem regulation but in a terrestrial example in the US the reintroduction of the wolf increased the abundance of its prey. There is also the economic problem that this would create. There is a large industry in Australia (where I live) and elsewhere in the world based on the observation of humpback whales through putting tourists on boats. If that couldnt occur a significant amount of money would be lost.
